Recruits receive extensive police training and education in law enforcement areas.
1. Recruits must successfully complete all academic courses.
2. After instruction on the care and use of the Division-issued service weapon, all recruits must qualify with this weapon in accordance with Rhode Island State Law.
3. Recruits are required to reside at the Training Academy. Lodging is provided for recruits at no cost; however, recruits are required to pay for all meals.
4. Recruits must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in their physical abilities and skills.
5. A rigorous program of physical conditioning, including calisthenics, hand-to-hand combat, and defensive tactics is conducted during the training process.
6. A progressive running program designed to strengthen the cardiovascular and cardio-respiratory systems, as well as increasing the aerobic capacity of recruits, is conducted during the Training Academy.
7. The ability to perform basic swimming skills is required to successfully complete the Basic Rescue and Water Safety Course.
8. Recruits are instructed in pursuit and defensive driving techniques and must demonstrate a high level of proficiency during this course of training.
